Which Anime Should I Watch Next This 2023?

Anime, the Japanese word that means any sort of animation originating from Japan, has successfully taken over the whole world like a tempest since the 90s. With uncountable successful and popular shows like Dragon Ball, One Piece, Naruto, Fullmetal Alchemist, Cowboy Bebop, Pokemon, Attack on Titan, etc., the anime genre has captured the loving hearts of so many people around the Earth., no matter what is their age or their race. Why is it possible? It was due to the fact that although anime itself is a genre, it still contains so many subgenres like comedy, romance, sci-fi, fighting, etc. There will always be something for anyone. Thus, the fandom of anime has become so huge and divisive that the new shows never seem to be able to completely grasp.

If you are a new fan of anime who just took the very first steps into this wonderful world, you must have been so overwhelmed by the sheer amount of shows that go on TV with each season. For example, in the recent Summer season, we have 59 shows, and that number does not include the leftover shows from the previous season. Thus, I am quite certain that you are currently having a very hard time finding out which show is great from the giant anime chart of Fall and Winter seasons. If that is really the case, then you are in luck, as I have done a lot of research and put together a list of the best anime you should watch next this 2023.

1. To Aru Majutsu No Index season 3

The long-awaited third season of the widely acclaimed light novel series of the same name, To Aru Majutsu No Index season 3 is showing promising future. After all, even though it has been more than 7 years since the day the last episode of the second season officially aired, the number of fans this show has never once decreased thanks to the prominence of the side story anime To Aru Kagaku No Railgun and the continued great reception of the light novel series. This anime will pick up right after the end of the second season and continue from there. If you love the tsundere Index and Mikoto or if you like to see Touma giving everyone a punch, then let’s watch it.

2. Fairy Tail (2018)

The third and final series of the much-loved Fairy Tail manga promises to be a festival for the eyes full of cool Dragon Slayer powers and Nakama powers. Of course, there is also the legendary fan service that Fairy Tail is so popular for. After the two previous series and the highly regarded manga, the number of fans of the Fairy Tail franchise has grown to an unthinkable height, and they all are waiting for the ending. So, if you are already one of them who are just waiting to see Natsu smash some faces, Erza using some new armors, or Gray with his Ice magic, then I don’t need to convince you. However, if you are a complete newbie, don’t hesitate and jump in, Fairy Tail will surely never disappoint you.

3. Tokyo Ghoul: re 2nd Season

There is no way that Tokyo Ghoul: re will not be on this list. After all, Tokyo Ghoul along with Attack on Titans were the ones that boosted the popularity of anime to a new level. They showed the world that anime does not only consist of happy stories for kids. These shows are dark, serious, and they illustrated clearly that the world is not always a happy place. Thus, Tokyo Ghoul has acquired a really huge number of followers who carried on to the sequel that is Tokyo Ghoul: re. The second season of this anime is showing promises for a festival of blood and gores, brutality and mortality. There is no way that anyone who loves dark and serious shows can miss this.

4. Goblin Slayer

The first completely new name on this list, Goblin Slayer is no stranger to popularity as its source material is one of the most loved light novels of 2017. However, it only rose to prominence after the release of the manga with the same name. There is only one word that is fit to describe this franchise, and that word is “brutal”. This series really lives up to that description. In the beginning, we were forced to watch the real brutality of a fantasy world full of monsters, especially the goblins. This series follows the steps of a young priestess who just started on her adventure journey and a silver adventurer nicknamed Goblin Slayer who only focuses on killing goblins while completely ignoring the other monsters if he can.

5. Sword Art Online: Alicization

The arguably most famous anime series if we don’t take into account the weekly series like One Piece or Naruto has made a return with a third season. The Sword Art Online series is one of the most divisive anime in history, with its fans furiously defending it and its haters memeing it to death. However, there is one thing that one cannot argue against this franchise, and that is it is surely one of the most commercially successful franchises of all time. After all, the light novel has over 20 million copies sold in the whole world. The series is often praised for its excellent grasp on the psychological aspects of virtual reality on the human psyche.

6. Tensei Shitara Slime Datta Ken

That Time I Got Reincarnated as a Slime is an adaption of the light novel of the same name. Before being published as a light novel, the series gained prominence as a great web novel series. It has sold over 4.5 million copies in print and is the 6th most read light novel of 2018. Thus, the anime series while being a completely new entry has managed to gather a humongous number of followers ready for its first episode. If you are a newbie in the world of anime, I recommend you to watch this anime as it is much lighter than the likes of Tokyo Ghoul or Goblin Slayer, but it is also serious when it needs to be.

7. Golden Kamuy 2nd Season

This is another dark, violent, and brutal anime for you guys. This anime is an adaption of the widely acclaimed manga series of the same name. Golden Kamuy won the ninth Manga Taishō award thanks to its fantastic grasp on the brutality and darkness of Japan in the aftermath of the Russo-Japanese War. However, it is not entirely a bloodfest, as there is still humanity stashed inside the heart of the main characters, from the cute Ainu girl Aspira to the battle-hardened and demobilized soldier, Saichi Sugimoto.

8. Irozuku Sekai no Ashita kara

This anime is the only entry on this list that is completely original. It is not an adaptation nor a sequel nor a prequel. It is set in Nagasaki of a parallel world where magic is still present in the daily lives of people, albeit with only a minuscule amount. The main character is a 17 years old girl who lost her emotion along with her sense of color at a really young age. The story follows her as she was sent to the past to interact with the younger version of her grandmother by the grandmother herself. This anime show promises to be a heart-warming anime that we all need after all the darkness the other entries of this list will show us.
